Justworks announced an ICHRA offering with Thatch on July 28. The launch creates another route through which small businesses can encounter and administer the benefit.
What the companies describe
Justworks says the offering embeds Thatch’s setup, administration and employee guidance in its experience. Its announcement describes enrollment, reimbursements, payroll deductions and ongoing support. This is a product partnership; it is not an announcement that Justworks acquired Thatch. source
The announcement establishes the companies’ intended service scope. It does not provide an independently audited comparison of cost, implementation success or support performance against another administrator.
Why the distribution route matters
Our interpretation is that putting ICHRA inside a platform an employer already uses can change the point at which benefits decisions happen. The buyer may begin with a payroll or HR relationship and encounter ICHRA as one available benefit model, rather than start by searching for a standalone administrator.
That can make discovery easier, but it also creates a practical question: which organization is responsible when a problem crosses payroll, the reimbursement platform and the insurer? An employer needs that answer before assuming the existing service relationship covers every new benefits task.
Questions for a comparable proposal
- Which legal entity contracts for administration, and which for insurance services?
- Who owns employee notices, elections and coverage substantiation?
- Where does an employee go for licensed plan-selection assistance?
- Who reconciles payroll deductions with premiums and reimbursements?
- What happens when a payment is late, rejected or applied to the wrong policy?
- What is the complete price, including any platform, setup and service charges?
Ask for these answers in the same format used for a standalone provider quote. Otherwise, a bundled offering and an administrator-only fee can appear comparable even when they cover different work.
The underlying employer decision remains
An embedded service does not determine whether the local individual market fits the workforce. The employer still needs to evaluate contribution design, eligible classes, employee coverage and the federal ICHRA requirements. source
Use our evaluation brief to document the requirements before the demonstration. Our Thatch profile covers its broader public positioning. Treat any promised efficiency from this distribution arrangement as a claim to verify through the actual workflow and contract.
